Choosing the Right College for Your Career

If you are considering going to college soon, you will need to decide which college is best for you.  There are many colleges to choose from, but the question is…which college should you apply to?  Here are some factors that will help you choose the college that is right for you.

Cost

1. The first thing you should consider when deciding on a college is the cost.  How much can you afford or willing to spend on your education?  You will need to find out how much you will have to pay in tuition expenses for the college of your choice before you begin the application process.  You can obtain this information by directly going to the college, search on line, or you can call the institution directly.  Bear in mind that State colleges are less expensive than private institutions. You should also apply for grants and financial aid to help defray the cost of you tuition expenses. (See link for FAFSA at bottom of page in the tips section).   If you don’t qualify for financial aid, you can apply for student loans.  Check with your bank or other financial institutions to find out how you can apply for a student loan.

2. What do you plan to major in?
What you decided to major in will help determine which school is best for you to attend. Once you decide what you want to major in, you can then research to find out which college best meets your needs.  For example, if you want to major in nursing, you should select a college that has an excellent nursing program. However, you should find out if the college is accredited by a reputable agency and has a good reputation for providing top quality education before you enroll. http://factoidz.com/the-importance-of-college-accreditation-is-your-degree-legit/ If you’re in doubt about which college is best for you, just go to www.colleges.com and search for a college(s) of your choice. After you find the college(s) click on the site to learn more about it.

3. Community college or university?
You will need to decide which is best for you a community college or a University.  If you are coming fresh out of high school, you can attend either one.  If you already have grants and scholarships for a particular university then you are ready to make your decision. But if you see that you cannot afford the tuition expenses at a particular university, you should consider going to a community college instead for the first two years.  Community colleges are two-year schools and are far less expensive than universities and you can transfer your electives to a university once you have completed your credit requirements. These are the same classes that you would take at a university but at a much cheaper cost. You should also keep in mind that you can apply for financial aid and/or student loans at either a community college or a university.

4. Location
How far do want to travel to the school of your choice?  If you are currently living at home and plan to go away to school, it’s simply just a matter of applying to school that you wish to attend. Keep in mind that room and board will drive up the cost of your education expenses significantly!  If you wish to attend a college where you don’t have to pay for room and board, you should apply to colleges in your area and select off-campus student.

Tips:
*apply for FAFSA online to see if you qualify for financial aid at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
*apply for your FAFSA in January when there are more funds available
*Online college is also an option
*Your ACT and SAT scores will also be a determining factor in selecting a college
