Best Ways to Study Alone in College

Despite the many advantages of group study or studying with a buddy, some students prefer to study alone. Some students find that there are advantages to self-study and do quite well on quizzes, test, and course grades. If you think you are better suited for self-study, here are some effective self-study tips.

~Find an area that is conducive for study~
1.  Find an area that is most conducive for self-study such the library, study room, or other quiet area.  Make sure the area that you choose to study in has adequate lighting and is free from distracting noises.

~Eliminate all major distractions~
2. You should turn off your music, cell phone, videos, and other major distractions that will only prevent you from focusing on your studies and you will not achieve the maximum benefits of studying alone.

~Bring relevant study materials~
3. You should take good notes during the class lectures and take them with you when you are ready to study…along with your books and other relevant material.

~Begin your study~
4. You should read all assigned chapters, scrutinize other related readings, study your notes, and research your assignments thoroughly.  Make outlines of your work to simplify it…then quiz yourself on all pertinent material.  You should also make flash cards to help you memorize important data and to retain needed material.  Try to devote at least 2 to 3 hours for each study session.

Tips:
*Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it
*Keep names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses for students to contact when you need help
*Discipline yourself to study consistently
